Accommodations
3 bedrooms, 1 1/2 baths,
close to restaurants,
adjacent open space,
move-in condition, easy terms
If these sound like attractive, inviting accommodations, you would be correct, but you also might be surprised to learn that they describe my back yard. Three nest boxes, two bird baths, one of which is more decorative than functional, numerous bird feeders that offer an enticing menu of seeds and suet, plus naturally occurring invertebrate snacks, along with nearby woods make for some nice accommodations judging by the number and types of birds that I regularly see. I know that many of them nest in or near my yard. I've seen cardinals, titmice, purple finches, and others feeding their young, and wrens, nuthatches, and tree swallows have nested in the boxes. Indeed, to my surprise and delight early last spring, one of my nest boxes was claimed by a pair of bluebirds!
Hoping to encourage my bluebirds to stay, and just in case there is a "bluebirdboxes.com" nest box-rating web site, I began putting mealworms in a feeder that I hung near the bluebirds' new home. Before long, I was being greeted each morning by Mr. Bluebird's excited chatter as he and the Mrs. impatiently waited for me to spoon delectably scrumptious little beetle larvae into the feeder. Yes, I believe, based upon the hours of entertainment with which they have generously returned my favors, that my feathered neighbors have found me to be quite accommodating.
Accommodating also are we in the GWVAS, I believe. We offer our members and friends a variety of meeting programs with widely ranging topics, field trips to see all manner of things that fly, flutter, crawl, or slither, and a very attractive newsletter that is as informative as it is entertaining. Add to the list such outreach efforts as birding courses, school seminars, and nature camp scholarships, and a strong, well-respected voice for conservation, and I believe that we have the makings of an organization that accommodates a wide range of interests.
We are able to accommodate these various and diverse interests because you, our members and friends, continuously return the favor with your generous donations, donations without which we could not offer all that we offer. If you are grateful for our efforts to accommodate your interests, and your past generosity indicates that you are, then we are doubly grateful for the financial support that encourages us to try to do even more.
Thank you for your past generosity and for your continued support.
Accommodatingly Yours,
Bob Wasilewski, GWVAS President
